“SAY CUP,” my son, Hank, shouts from his bedroom where he is looking for a tiny toy saddle. “Say horse.”

WHAT I have found interesting about parenthood is how bad I am at it. This has come as a surprise. I always pegged myself as a natural and went through years of highly unnatural manipulations and unspeakable anguish to have Hank only to—in my opinion—completely fail in what is probably the most important role of my life.

This is not really surprising, and by this, I mean my complete miscalculation of what my true nature would be. That lack of self-awareness could, in fact, be the story of my life, which if it were just me going through this journey by myself would probably be pretty comedic, but throw a kid into the mix and, unfortunately, the dye of comedy quickly changes into something entirely different.
